Jessica Gokee LaRose, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown Medical School. Dr. LaRose earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. She completed her clinical internship in Medical Psychology at the Boston Consortium, followed by an NHLBI-funded T32 fellowship in cardiovascular behavioral medicine here at Brown prior to becoming research faculty. Dr. LaRose’s research interests include the development of obesity prevention and treatment programs for adolescents and young adults, with an emphasis on the transition from late adolescence to young adulthood. This developmental period, often called emerging adulthood, is characterized by substantial risk for weight gain and obesity, which is associated with increased cardiovascular risk later in life. However, little is known about how best to intervene with this age group, and they are underrepresented in standard behavioral weight loss programs. Dr. LaRose is particularly interested in how to tailor recruitment and treatment protocols for this age group, and in the role that interpersonal influences (e.g., peers) play in both the initiation and maintenance of healthy behaviors during these years.
