Dr. Amy Gorin is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry
and Human Behavior (Research) at Brown Medical School. Dr.
Gorin received her B.A. in Psychology (cum laude) from College
of the Holy Cross in 1994 and her Ph.D. degree in Clinical
Psychology from State University of New York at Stony Brook in
2000. During that same year, she completed her clinical
psychology internship at the Brown University Clinical
Psychology Training Consortium. Dr. Gorin also completed a
post-doctoral fellowship at Brown under the mentorship of Dr.
Rena Wing.
Dr. Gorin’s research interests are in behavioral approaches to the problem of obesity. Her Ph.D. dissertation focused on spouse support in the treatment of obese binge eaters. She is currently the Principal Investigator on two grants. One is a grant funded by NAASO (North American Association for the Study of Obesity) and examines the period after angioplasty as a “teachable moment” for obesity change. Dr. Gorin is also Principal Investigator on an NIH grant which involves three centers, The Miriam Hospital, the University of Alabama and the University of Minnesota, who are all participating in the Look AHEAD trial, a study of weight loss in individuals with diabetes. Dr. Gorin is examining the “ripple effect” of the Look AHEAD weight loss program on untreated spouses and the home environment. Dr. Gorin has also published five peer reviewed empirical articles and four chapters. She has presented at several scientific conferences and reviewed manuscripts for both obesity and psychology focused publications. Recently, she was a Visiting Instructor at Brown University and co-taught the Behavioral Medicine Course.
