Dr. Rena R. Wing is a Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and  holds a joint appointment as a Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Epidemiology at University of Pittsburgh.  She established and directs the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at Miriam Hospital. 

Dr. Wing is well known for her research on behavioral treatment of obesity and particularly its application to Type II diabetes. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles on these topics.  She has been the principal investigator on numerous grants funded by the National Institutes of Health. Currently she is a principal investigator on the Diabetes Prevention Program and has developed the lifestyle intervention being used in all 27 clinical centers in that study. In addition, she recently became principal investigator of the Miriam/Brown site for a new 15-center trial entitled, Look AHEAD.  This study will examine the long term health outcomes of weight loss. In addition, she has been named the chairman of this study and will thus oversee the design and execution of this study and publication of its results.

Dr. Rena Wing is a member of the council for NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Disease), one of the institutes of the NIH. She is also a member of the NIDDK Task Force on the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity.  She has lectured nationally and internationally on weight loss and obesity topics.
